Why And How I Became A Real Estate Agent – Part I

I’ve had some people that have asked me how I got started and what my story was. So, I’m going to dive in a little deeper and give you a little understanding of why and how I became a real estate agent, my journey to get here and some of the things that transpired along the way.

I lived in Dallas, Texas for 25 years and was pretty successful in sales and sales management in a number of different companies. They were mostly startup and I learned a ton! I was super excited about getting to be a very successful technology sales guy. I was trying to be very successful and have a successful career. I worked super hard. But my focus was all about being successful, making money and creating wealth and material things. Do you want to know where this took me? Not a good place.

One night my wife came to me and said I want a divorce…….

I was demolished. Devastated. I couldn’t believe those words. I had just gotten a promotion. I felt like I was bringing home the bacon. We had a big house in a gated community. We had a country club membership. We were going on vacations. But if you think about it, most of those are all material things, right?

I was concerned. I was consumed in my career and didn’t have a good balance in my life. I wasn’t focused on my kids or wife. I wasn’t there for teacher conferences, sporting events, ballet, and just being there to support my wife.

I was providing financially but not emotionally or spiritually. All the intimacy in the marriage was really affected. So I made a decision that all the money, wealth and material things didn’t matter. I went in the next day, after getting a promotion, and resigned my position. I stayed up all night and cried. For this new job, they were going to send me out of the country for the next 12 or 24 months. That just wasn’t going to work or help this. There were some serious issues going on in our marriage. My wife was struggling. I didn’t want our marriage to be over.

I told her that I don’t agree and that I was going to prove to her that I wasn’t going to let this happen. I came home at like noon that day after quitting and told her I quit my job. She’s like, what?? I basically told her, “You can hate me. You can say you want a divorce. You can say all those things that matter. I’m here for you. I think we need to get support, counseling and talk to our minister.”

That was the beginning of that journey. Fast forward…and about a year later we renewed our vows. We had gone through a lot of counseling and it was a really valuable process. One of the things that came out of it was our marriage counselor told my wife that she should probably go to AA. Long story short, she did. It was the greatest decision, cause I tell people today, our marriage wouldn’t be where it is today. We wouldn’t be married if it weren’t for AA and counseling.

I just want to say, if you have a wife, husband, family member, friend or even yourself, get them or yourself treatment. There are so many people that are affected in their marriages by addiction or financial reasons. And you can get help.

This is just the beginning of my story, but it is a huge part. Read next week’s email/post for more details of how I got to where I am today. Don’t be afraid to reach out. Like I said, we wouldn’t be where we are today without help.
