Perfection is Your Enemy

Are you still waiting on getting started with something because it’s not quite perfect yet? I have learned that perfection is not attainable. And so I don’t strive for perfection in my real estate business and neither should you!

I’m not perfect. Recently, I tried to do a Facebook Live and somehow the video ended up being upside down. But I’m not going to delete the video because I think the information there is still important and interesting and over the years I have learned that everything doesn’t always need to be perfect.

For many real estate agents perfection is the enemy. When we try too hard to make things perfect or we wait too long to do something because it’s not perfect yet, we are missing opportunities. I see lots of agents who are so overwhelmed and daunted by the task of doing things perfectly and so afraid of not being perfect that they never even get started!

I am giving you permission to not be 100% perfect. Because no one is totally perfect. And it is better for you to get started and make mistakes and learn from them than waiting and waiting and waiting because you’re working on making something perfect.

I create a market report every month and I send out a newsletter and I will happily admit that there are spelling and grammar errors. You’ve probably found mistakes in these blog posts! But that’s not going to stop me from writing them. My imperfect market reports and emails and blog posts are still better than someone who isn’t creating anything.

So if you’re one of those people who is so worried about starting something, whether that is online marketing and social media or publishing content or getting into the community, then I’m here to tell you to change your thinking.

If you never try you will always be bad at it. You are allowed to make mistakes! Write your first article or blog post. Make your first Facebook post. I promise it’s not as bad as you think. When you do that, even if it’s not perfect, you are still doing more than all of the real estate agents who continue to do nothing.

You will learn as you go. And you’ll probably look back in a year and be amazed at how far you’ve come. You can only move forward once you get started. I’m not saying you should be sloppy or not put in any effort. You want to show your dream clients the best that you do. But it’s alright if your best isn’t perfect!

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy but you can change that by changing your thinking. Stop striving for perfection and just get started and you will achieve your goals and attract dream clients.
