Why Telling Your WHOLE Story Matters!

Why Telling Your Whole Story Matters

Do you feel comfortable telling your story to clients so you can connect with them? Your story is what makes you unique and it’s what differentiates you from all the other agents. It’s okay if your story wasn’t always a success story and that you’ve had pain and challenges in your life!

I’m very open about my story, the good and the bad parts, because I truly believe it helps me connect with my clients better. I have told my story before. I’ve talked about my wife who struggled with alcohol addiction and that we had challenges in our marriage. I don’t necessarily lead with that but it’s something we went through and we learned from.

There are lots of real estate agents who have been through divorce and they don’t want to talk about it. But when you realize that 50% of marriages in the United States end in divorce you will realize that there is 50% of the population who can relate to you! People want to connect and you can use your story, even the difficult parts, to find and create those connections. That doesn’t mean you have to make it the focus of who you are, but you shouldn’t try to hide it

But you don’t just have to use the sad or difficult parts of your story. You should also include your passions and your hobbies. Especially if those relate to your market!

This is going to be the 11th year that I participate in the Crested Butte Boys Ski Trip. There’s between six to ten of us and everyone comes to my home.
I tell my real estate clients that I’ve got my boys ski trip coming up because it’s part of my passion for skiing. And for a buyer it’s a great way for them to see how I use my home in the market and they can think about how they might organize the same thing when they’ve bought their home!

So think about who you are and how your passions and hobbies shape who you are and what you do. Think about how your community and where you live influences you.

Are you an avid runner? Then you can talk about all the great running trails or the park or the forest in your area! What nonprofits are you involved in? Talk about the churches or schools you and your family are a part of.

Your story and your experiences are what make you unique, different and interesting! Use all of these things to your advantage when interacting with clients. When clients feel connected to you and feel like they can relate to you, they will trust you more!
